Conservative Dentistry is the branch of dentistry which is concerned with the conservation of teeth. It deals with the diagnoses and treatment of structural defects in teeth which are the result of disease, studies of all aspects of the tooth decay its cause, its prevention and its treatment - on the tooth surface, restores proper tooth shape and structure, function, esthetics and its harmonious relationships with surrounding tissues while preserving pulpal health. Restoration of injured teeth is done with a filling or an inlay.

What materials are used for the fillings?

The filling is a tooth-colored plastic mixture filled with glass (silicon dioxide) and is a composite quartz resin that usually contains some sort of light sensitive agent. A composite filling can be tinted to match any tooth color and it forms a natural bond with the existing tooth in a way that metal fillings cannot. The end result is nearly invisible fillings. Composite fillings are environmentally non-toxic because they use no mercury. They are stronger because they bond directly to the surface of the tooth.

What are inlays?

Dental inlays are used to repair decaying teeth (molars) that do not require extensive bridgework, or to replace older metal fillings. Most dental inlays are composed of porcelain, though some can be made from gold or composite resin. Inlays are made in a dental lab with the help of an impression and must be permanently cemented by a dentist.
